8th IWCC
8th INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
ON CRITICAL CURRENTS
IN SUPERCONDUCTORS
MAY 27-29, 1996
KITAKYUSHU / JAPAN
FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
BACKGROUND
This series of international workshops of critical cur-
rents in superconductors (IWCC) was initiated by
Prof. H. C. Freyhardt and colleagues from G"ottingen
in 1974 for the purpose of discussion on problems in
flux pinning and related electromagnetic properties.
After the discovery of high temperature supercon-
ductors the flux pinning characteristics and exotic
properties of flux lines in these new materials have
been extensively argued all over the world. However,
many aspects still remain unsolved. This workshop
will focus on fundamental theories and experiments
leading to quantitative understanding of flux pinning
and vortex properties in superconductors.
SCOPE
The following subjects will be discussed for low and
high temperature superconductors:
(1) fundamental flux pinning mechanisms and prop-
erties
(2) artificially introduced pinning centers, including
irradiated defects
(3) direct observation of flux dynamics, flux distri-
butions and current distributions
(4) exotic properties in artificial multilayers
(5) intergranular critical currents in weakly coupled
superconductors
(6) phase diagrams of flux line systems
(7) irreversibility line
(8) flux dynamics and electromagnetic phenomena
LAYOUT OF THE WORKSHOP
Topics of current interest will be introduced in in-
vited review talks which will address key issues and
problems. These problems will be discussed among
participants in poster sessions where the latest re-
sults will be presented. Poster sessions will be fol-
lowed by discussion sessions where discussion leaders
will focus on selected interesting results presented in
posters. Short oral presentations will be given by
authors chosen by discussion leaders to start discus-
sion. There will be no parallel sessions, so that all
participants can join every session.
LANGUAGE
The conference language will be English.
SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT
The second announcement and the final call for con-
tributed papers will be mailed by the end of October
1995 to those who have returned the attached reply
slip.
ABSTRACTS
Abstracts of contributed papers must arrive at the
conference office not later than February 28, 1996.
Detailed instructions for the preparation of the ab-
stracts will be given in the second announcement.
PROCEEDINGS
Conference proceedings will be published in a camera-
ready format. Detailed instructions will be given in
the second announcement. The papers will be due
at the conference.
EXHIBITION
Please inquire at the conference office.
IMPORTANT DATES
Second announcement: Oct. 1995
Abstracts: 28 Feb. 1996 (KIT)
Housing: 31 Mar. 1996 (Kitakyushu)
Early registration: 15 Apr. 1996 (KIT)
CONFERENCE VENUE
The conference will be held in Kitakyushu Interna-
tional Conference Center of Kitakyushu City, Japan.
Kitakyushu City is located in the nothernmost part
of Kyushu Island and about 60 km from Fukuoka
City. Many airlines surve Fukuoka airport and free-
way buses and rail can be used to reach Kokura sta-
tion in Kitakyush City. You can reach the Confer-
ence Center from Kokura station in 5 minutes on
foot. It is very comfortable in this season in Japan
and the temperature is around 23 C (14 C in mid-
night).
ANNOUNCEMENT OF ICEC16/ICMC
The joint conference of the 16th International Cryo-
genic Engineering Conference and the International
Cryogenic Materials Conference will be held 20 - 24
May, 1996, one week before the Workshop, in the
same Conference Center.
